After a over a week of rain, I had the opportunity this
morning to plant some of my new fruit trees: sweet and sour cherry, a
Blenheim apricot, 7 varieties of heirloom apples and 4 citrus. All of these are dwarf or semi-dwarf so
they can be planted in containers.
I’m also testing a new type of container for these trees. The container (Smartpot) is made of fabric and the
manufacturer claims that they are superior to plastic and ceramic pots because
they provide more oxygen to the roots, drain better and don’t get as hot in the
summer sun. Smartpots come in a variety of sizes from 1 to 200
gallons. I’m starting my trees in a 7 gallon
container (about 15” diameter) and will transplant them to a larger containers
in about 2 years. I’ll post updates
on how the SmartPots are performing in coming months.
Today tip is to plant citrus tress in cactus mix rather than garden soil. Citrus trees need good drainage and the cactus mix works well for this.
